About the Item:
The mask, characterized by a serious expression, symbolizes the joy of a bountiful harvest. It has been intricately carved and hand-painted by artist Abdul Aziz Mohamadu. According to him, “This mask is traditionally used by the Chamba people of Nigeria during the Chambalare festival, a celebration marking the end of days marked by hunger." He explains, "Farmers don this mask to reflect on past struggles with famine. While the festival is a time of joy and celebration, the visage of the mask serves as a reminder for the community to tend to their crops diligently and to avoid waste." The mask is named Daimuwa, a Hausa term that translates to "Worried."

About Our Artist:
Abdul Aziz Mohamadu recounts his journey: “I always had a passion for painting, but I was uncertain about pursuing it as a career, so I explored other options.” His turning point came when he spent time observing master carver Musa at his workshop. “After a while, I picked up a log of wood and attempted to carve a mask as I had seen him do. Musa was surprised and offered to help me refine my skills.” Abdul Aziz developed a newfound love for carving, ultimately leading him to become a master carver himself.
